Two Best Cures
I love this bit of advice and encouragement I read during my morning meditation and prayers–from The Spirit of Ireland, a book of daily devotions that my friend Margaret gave to my husband and me after our trip to Ireland in 2012. I still read its wisdom each day.
“A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures.”
I found this reading very appropriate during this time of international stress.
And I also appreciate what C.S. Lewis said decades ago during the Atomic Bomb scare. We may apply his words to our current ‘bomb’–Covid-19.
“This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.”
— “On Living in an Atomic Age” (1948) in Present Concerns: Journalistic Essays“
Thank you Karen! That is a great reminder for us all. He is our refuge in times like this for sure.
I was reminded to day of the time that Jesus was with the disciples in the boat on the Sea of Galilee . The disciples were so fearful because he was sleeping and seemed not to care.
I love those words He said “Peace be still”. So often we my think he is sleeping when really He is just waiting for us to call on Him or the time is right for a miracle.
Just a few of my thought on this day.
Here are my verses for today.
Psalm 37:39-40 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength in time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and delivers them;
He delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
Because they take refuge in Him.
Beautiful, Etta Mae. I take the Lord’s words to heart.
First I must say that I really did appreciate Etta Mae’s comment about Jesus ‘waiting for us to cal on him’. Oh how true.
Karen, I am so glad you are still enjoying the Ireland devotions and I almost laughed out loud when I read the quote: “A good laugh and a good long sleep are the two best cures”. I have had a bad cold for over a week ( caught it from my daughter, I guess, and she had it for two weeks) and I have really been tired and yet have tried to find something to laugh about eact day. I told one friend when you think about the fact in five more months I will be 93 years old that is enough to make one tired! So, we laugh. Today when I told Tanya I just could not believe how tired I am and all I want to do is sleep! She said: “Mom, that is just what you need to do. SO instead of taking an hour or two nap after lunch, in my recliner, I wemt back to my bed, aroung ten o’clock and slept soundly until noon! BOY did that feel good! My cold felt better and I felt better all over! This afternoon I did the samme thing – took a two hour nap on my bed. Tomorrow I plan on doing the same and pehaps by Friday this cold will be gone! Let me hastin to say I am blessed that I do not have the virus – no fever, lung problem etc. etc. We are blessed.
Thanks, Karen. I have enjoyed a good laugh and a long sleep today and plan on doing the same tomorrow.
Stay well! Love to you. Margaret
Good for you, Margaret. I’m napping each day too and taking a walk outside when there is no rain. Both have revived my body and spirit.
Thanks Karen for this great reminder. So grateful to have faith and know that this too shall pass and we are cradled in loving strong arms. This is an excellent time to go inside and meditate and pray more, be more creative, entertain ourselves like when we were children. Not so bad to be isolated and stay indoors! We are blessed to have warm comfortable homes and healthy food and clean clothes. A time for reflection and solace.
Sending love to you all dear friends. Stay strong, healthy and free from this awful virus. Think on it as a Spiritual Retreat if you like!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
Thank you, Kathleen. You always share your wisdom and encouragement and I appreciate it–and you and Don, of course.
Thank you, Karen.
I seldom comment, butI always appreciate your wise words.
So kind of you to drop by, Janet. Stay well and thank you for being my friend.
Amen!!!! These are words of wisdom that are life giving. May we all flourish during these times. Bless you Karen. Love you.
Thank you, Sandy.
Hi Karen, thank for those timely words.I too had a lousy cold that nearlyflattened me. Thank goodness no fever or any suspicious symptoms.
Karen, I am ever so grateful that I have a warm home, clean clothes and food. Others are not so fortunate.
So grateful that God is in charge.
Thanks, Joan. Feel better soon and thank you for sharing your heart.
Thanks for all your encouraging words and I love that Isaiah scripture. Our God is faithful and nothing surprises Him.
Yes, nothing surprises our gracious God.
Thanks for your inspiring words. I love this quote from CS Lewis. His wisdom is Holy Spirit inspired – and like the Holy Spirit, timeless.
Love in Jesus,
Glenda
I like your comment, “The H.S. is timeless.” Words to cling to in every situation. ❤️
Lovely, Karen. A good laugh and a good sleep – best medicine indeed! They both make a huge difference in my life and outlook and even my ability to trust in God’s faithfulness!
Thanks, Carol. Sleep and laughter. They are getting me through this trial too–undergirded by the grace of God, for sure.
