React or Respond?
I’ve been thinking about this question lately. Do I want to respond thoughtfully and kindly to situations that provoke me? Or am I tempted to fly off the handle with the first words that come to mind–usually words that are far from thoughtful and kind?
There’s a slogan in recovery circles that says: EGO = Edging God Out. What a powerful reminder. Whenever I’m stuck in my ‘ego’ God is certainly not on my mind or in my heart. And that’s when I react instead of responding with truth in a loving way.
I did a bit of reading over the past few days that helped me see that when I’m in a whirl of emotion over a hurtful event or experience I want to defend myself. But in the end I feel worse instead of better. So day by day I’m learning that responding with love, instead of reacting with self-defense, the fire goes out and good will is restored. Is it easy? Absolutely not! “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” (1 John 4:16)
I can certainly relate to wanting to respond in kindness rather than defending myself. Like you, I often do what I don’t want to do in this regard!
What you have written offers encouragement and a reminder that we should all listen more – and pray accordingly – before responding!
Sending love and hugs across the miles…
Thank you, Glenda. Sending love back and appreciation for your good words.
I think a certain famous person you may have heard of suggested that technique. It’s called turning the other cheek.
Great reminder, Janet, of the Lord’s word on this topic.
My Dear Karen, my former neighbor sent me a daily devotional book for women called “Hugs”. The introduction mentioned different ways to give a hug, like a pat on the back, or a kind word, etc. and I am really enjoying the daily one page devotions. Yesterdays had a quote from Helen Keller: “Believe when you are most unhappy, that there is something you can do in the world. So long as you can sweeten another’s pain, life is not in vain”. I believe the ‘thought for the day’ really fits in with your todays writing and the author is unknown. Ilove this:
“If a lion’s roar isn’t getting you anyplace, try a bear hug.REALLY love that one, Love you too! Margaret
Hi Margaret. Thanks for these timely quotes. Right on!
Love this reminder, Karen! Respond with love and kindness. I tend toward reacting and have to really work at this. You are a blessing. love, Heidi
Thanks, Heidi. We all need a reminder now and again and as Janet said above, Jesus reminded us to turn the other cheek!
