My Heroes!
I opened the door to my house after returning from a week-long retreat. Chirp! Chirp!
I recognized that sound. Oh no! Back to reality. One or more of my smoke detector batteries had given out. That meant buying new ones to replace the old. I’m not tall enough to handle this task of replacing even with a step-ladder so I asked my trusty neighbor to help. He was more than happy to give me a hand.
However, after securing four new ones the chirping continued–once every two minutes. I timed them. We walked around the house and realized it was the smoke detector in the middle of the highest point of the high ceiling in my dining room (think two-story high). How could we reach that? My neighbor’s ladder wasn’t tall enough and frankly, I was afraid for him to climb that high even if it could reach.
That very day another neighbor came to take a look and suddenly he thought of an idea. “Call the fire department,” he said. “I’m 99% sure one of the firemen will come to your rescue. They have all kinds of ladders for all situations.”
Voila! What a great idea.
I never would have thought of that but I tried it and next thing you know three darling young fire fighters arrived in the big rig and brought in a high ladder. Two held it in place while the third scurried up to the top and made the change. Imagine!
One fireman told me this is just part of their community service and do such all the time–including getting cats down from trees, right? 😊
So this week the firefighters of the Watsonville, California Fire Department are my true heroes.
WOW! What a blessing and great information~just in case we need them!
They are Heroes far more then we realize. I have to admire them and even have bought postage stamps with firefighters on them. My prayers go out to the many brave people who do so much to protect people in need. We are blessed. Thanks so much for sharing this info!
Love to you. Margaret
Thanks for cheering for our firefighters, Margaret. I’m with you on that.
I love this story. You are right that fire fighters are true heroes. I bet the captain of Watsonville, California Fire Department would love to have this story. I’m sure he’d put it on the board for everyone to see.
Thanks for your idea, Sandy. I shared my blog by posting it as a review on the Watsonville Fire Station’s web site.
Nice tribute to the Watsonville Fire Dept. Kudos to the team. They came through for you in a big way! Love it!
Thanks, Glenda. I agree that they came through for me in a big way.
Sooooo…How many firemen did it take to change a battery? LOL.
Just kidding.(Wink) That was a great idea and a helpful service.
Glad you were able to silence the chirping!
Smiles, BRC
Thanks, Beth. It took three!!
Lol…Smiles, BRC
This story made me smile Karen. What a practical, and sweet, solution to your need, and what fun to have these darling young men assist you with smiles on their faces. And I’m glad you got the beeping stopped!
Yes, it was quite a fun-filled experience and practical too.
Great story, Karen. I had a similar experience. My car stalled and a lovely police lady stopped to help, re-called AAA to hurry the process, stayed with me in the hot sun until the wrecker came and I was safely seated. A new experience. She even told me if they had to keep my car to call her (gave me her card) and she would come and bring me home. I wrote a letter to the Chief of Police commending her, etc. etc. I got a beautiful reply of thanks from him and was told my letter was posted on the police dept. bulletin board.
We definitely need to lift up all of those in uniform whenever we can. They are our angels when we’re in need.
Have a wonderful year, Karen, and keep smiling.
Thanks, Marie, for sharing your experience similar to mine. Our service professionals are so valuable to our daily lives. I agree. They are our angels when we are in need.
