Is the Grass Greener on the Other Side?
I’ve been wondering. Is the grass greener on the other side of the street or is it my imagination because I sometimes feel dissatisfied with what’s on my side? I thought about this while on vacation in Ireland a few years ago. I went out for a walk one afternoon alongside a pasture filled with sheep and lambs. I stopped when I saw one of the little ones climb through the slatted fence and wander over to the field on the opposite side of the road. He munched for quite some time but after he’d had his fill he scampered back to where he’d come from and crawled through the fence to join the other babes.
I chuckled to myself, wishing I could ask him if what he saw really was better than what he had. Of course, I’ll never know, but I did learn from his example. I’m like that more often than I care to admit. Would life be easier and greener if I had as much money as so-and-so or if I scored a bestseller on the New York Times list or had the lovely complexion of the woman who works out next to me in the fitness class? Probably not.
When I come back to reality I see that what I have, what I look like, and where I live is perfect for me because it is God’s design for my unique life. I calm down, crawl back to reality, and focus on the green grass in my pasture, following my Shepherd.
“Acknowledge that the Lord is God. He made us, and we are his.
We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:3)
Lovely reflection. Thank you dear Karen…
You are so welcome, Terrie.
Good food for thought Karen! I will have to ask that little lamb when I see her soon in Ireland and let you know!!
We are all so blessed just as we are and with what we have especially our faith and understanding of God’s laws and we will keep on loving our neighbor as ourselves!! Thank you ……. much love and many blessings to you today and every precious gift of today ❤️.
Thank you for your wise and lovely words, Kathleen.
That’s a great subject. The first thing I thought of was the lawn on one side of my own walk way and the other side. Then what Dorothy said, crowded my mind, “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.”
Yes, Jim, Dorothy said it well. 🙂
Iove this one and for once I really don’t have any comment other than a big THANK YOU!
Wish I could hug the lamb!!
( imagine that? no comment from me??! smile)
You’re welcome, Margaret. 🙂
Beautiful and fits so well with your setting…changing scenery can open our eyes to so much..thank you for the lesson as I sit sheepishly guilty. ha
What a sweet and humble comment, Carol. Thank you.
Great thought and darling photo of that sheep. He looks like he is pondering….
I fell in love with that sheep. Just had to post his pic. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Karen, thanks and it is food for thought. Yes, maybe the grass is greener on the other side but you still have to mow it. And I rest my case. Hee
True. Whatever side you live on you have to mow! 🙂
Much needed wisdom in my little pasture. Thank you so much. 🙂

Beautifully written and so true. Thanks, Karen.
Thanks, Pam. I appreciate your support.
Well, Karen, you just saved me a trip outside my fence. I don’t even like to eat grass. 😉

Hi Beth. Glad you’re happy within your own pasture. 🙂
It took a while, but it is a lovely place to be. 😉

Sometimes stepping stones are in the grass.
True. Thanks for that reminder, Janet.
I love your description of the little escaping lamb, Karen. We need to remember that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, despite any perceived gaps we see in ourselves. Thanks for the reminder.
Thanks, Carol. I hope all is well as you get ready for your move. I imagine there is plenty of green grass to anticipate in your new location. 🙂
