Bye, Bye, Fridge!
The old girl just turned 13–a teenager now but that’s about right for her lifespan so she’s groaning with age and can’t keep her temperature where it should be. I took the hint and am sending her off to the recycle yard today, to be replaced with a brand new version–a smaller modern one that fits my current lifestyle.
As I look around my house I’m reminded of all the furniture and appliances Charles and I purchased together for our new (at the time) home here in Watsonville, California, and I realize how temporary each one is. Some pieces last longer than others and some simply can’t hold up as long as I’d like them to.
It’s a good analogy for our own temporary state here on earth. If you’re reading this then you’ve made it well past the teen years but still the end times are a-coming. I used to thing this was a maudlin thought and pushed it away, but now I’ve made friends with the reality that there will be a day when I’m groaning with age, just like my fridge, and it will be my turn to ‘retire’ for good.
But unlike my fridge, a home awaits me with the Lord who is with me now, will be then, and forever after. I’m not ready to take that step just yet but I rest in the truth that when it comes I will be ready.
“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him.”
1 Corinthians 2:9

Good one as always! After my husband died, I moved to a condo and my daughter and son-in-law said I needed a new fridge! The stove and other kitchen appliances were fine and I thought the fridge should be okay too-didn’t need to spend more money! The three of us were cleaning out and getting ready for me to move my things over and I was cleaning in the kitchen. I got a shock when I pulled out the fridge and saw what looked like oil on the back, rust, and a lot of things that were really frightening. I did not say anything to Tanya and Fred but while we were eating dinner out I causually said: Let’s go look at some refrigerators while we are out! My awesome son-in-law is a shopper and wanted to jump up immediately and go to Lowes, next door and look! We found one there that we liked but Fred wanted to look further. We went home, he got the newpaper and found that Sears had the same fridge on sale, plus free delivery and would take the old one away and the sale ended the very next day! WOW! It was great and all of us were happy!
Happy hunting to you for whatever you need! end of story! smile.
Love ‘ya! Margaret
Thanks for that cute fridge story. So similar to mine. The new one is in and we are happy with each other!! 🙂
Hi Karen,
I can relate. Great analogy. I think I replaced all our appliances at one time or the other. In terms of my longevity, it has hit. I don’t worry about it because I know where I am going. Of course I know no one who wants to step into oblivion, but what waits on the other said is really something to look forward to. What I don’t like about crossing over is, I’ll miss seeing the kids and the new kids. My kids have literally been my life. I had a thought the other day: when we are young, we think there is plenty of time. . . .and then there’s not.

Thanks for your great reflection, Jim. I’m with you on our kids being so important in our lives.
Live for today, for the hour, for the minute and second. Forget the past and leave tomorrow to the Lord. Right Karen?
Right!!
