Amelia Mary Earhart was an American aviation pioneer and author, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. “Decide whether or not the goal is worth the risks involved. If it is, stop worrying.”
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was an American politician, diplomat and activist. She was the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, having held the post from March 1933 to April 1945. “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
While doing some research for a writing project I started looking for quotes from famous American women. There were MANY but these four jumped out at me.
Each one inspires me to keep on going regardless of the challenges that life brings. I hope they will drop a bit of courage and hope into your life too.
Maria Mitchell, the first American woman to become a professional astronomer. “When we are chafed and fretted by small cares, a look at the stars will show us the littleness of our own interests.”
Louisa May Alcott, author of “Little Women” and other literary works. “I am not afraid of storms for I am learning to sail my ship.”
Three of those have been my favorite quotes for years, and I thank you for reminding me of them. Life is one long “adjusting of sails” as we learn to navigate our ships through the storms. And Amelia… such spunk and courage. You have carried her spirit into the years when many slow down and/or give up dreaming. You should write a book about how to do THAT, Karen, and I’ll buy your first copy. 🙂
Thank you, Kristi. I’m so encouraged by your generous comment.
Compared to men, why are so few women quoted? Eleanor Roosevelt also said: “Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.” Timely quote, don’t you think? She also said: “One’s philosophy is not best expressed with words; it is expressed in the choices one makes…and the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility.”
I love quotes. Good luck with your project. Why do we say that when luck has little to do with it?
Marie, thank you for adding more of Eleanor’s quotations. She continues to inspire women and men!
Thanks. You’re an amazing woman yourself.
Janet, you’re so kind. Thank you for encouraging me.
LOVE all these quotes! Thank you, Karen, so much. I have always liked this quote by Helen Keller:
“Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light”.
She certainly was an amazing woman and her Teacher was even more amazing!
Love and blessings, Margaret
Great quote from Helen Keller to add to the list. Thanks, Margaret. As women we are in such good company.
Great quotes, Karen. Thank you. We have so many women from whom we can learn; you’ve been one of those for me. Thank you.
What a lovely comment, Carol. Thank you so much.
Love all of these, especially Eleanor Roosevelt’s, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
YES, thanks, Heidi. Eleanor had so much wisdom for all of us.
Did they ever find Amelia? I heard somewhere where they may have found a grave — but no plane. Love the quotes. Esp Eleanors. Have a great day Karen
Thanks, Jim. The last I heard about Amelia was they found a photo that may show she survived a landing. Here’s a link to a video and article on the latest. https://www.aol.com/article/news/2017/07/05/new-photo-could-prove-amelia-earhart-survived-her-final-flight/23017204/
