Sleepyhead
That’s been me the last week or so. Old age, cold weather, feeling lazy, whatever. I just haven’t wanted to get out bed–so I haven’t–until an hour or more later than usual. One day I stayed in my bathrobe all day. I felt decadent. But then I realized it’s my choice. I’m retired.
I listened to music. I read. I dozed. When I finally got up, showered and dressed, I was ready for what was next–a bowl of hot oatmeal with blueberries, sliced peaches, and a dollop of yogurt and maple syrup.
Sometimes it’s quite all right to pamper yourself. And so I will whenever I want to and more important–need to.
How about you? Do you give yourself a few hours now and then to sleep a little longer or to read, listen to music, watch a favorite movie or tv show?
Rest is essential for improved mental health, increased concentration and memory, a healthy immune system, reduced stress, a happy mood and even a healthier metabolism.
And I love the thought that when I rest, I surrender to God, trusting him to handle the things in my life that I cannot take care of by myself.
In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 ESV
Thank you for your writing today Karen. Resting when we need to without guilt is such a blessing. It helps me so much to let myself lay in bed a little longer because I warm and cozy. My home this morning was 60 degrees and it was really cold. For one hour I listened to a meditation tape and practiced my deep breathing exercises while I was in bed. Instead of doing the usual chores around the house, I put on a really warm long coat, hat and scarf. Then I went outside and took photos of beautiful red calla lilies and red tulips against a purple silk background. There were plenty of things that needed to get done around the house, but I gave myself permission to experience the thrill taking beautiful photographs that I will share with others. I love giving myself the freedom to experience joy without guilt even when it’s out of my normal routine.
I love hearing this, Sandy. So glad you are taking care of yourself.
This is so wonderful. I gave myself a day like that today. I never used to be able to do that without guilt. Now I can. Thanks for the reminder that we all need that. love, Heidi
Great to hear Heidi. Let’s continue to take good care of ourselves.
I feel refreshed and centered when I rest in the Lord. Thank you Karen, In His Love Lynn Clayton
Thanks Lynn. I love knowing you are caring for yourself.
Hi Karen. Enjoyed your blog so much.True confessions. I have little trouble endulging myself and enjoying the good life the good Lord has blessed me with. I have so much to be grateful for. Making the effort to tend to business isn’t easy for me. A true procrastinator…that I am.
Thanks, Joan. So good to keep in touch with you.
I relate fully to your blogs often. This one is so true!
We all need a “day off” and sometimes, a whole week would be nice. Well, we think that, until sickness, weather or something else prevents us from being around people or going places. Then, we wish for an activity. I am happy you embraced the day and enjoyed it. Bravo!!! 😍
And so glad you give yourself a day of rest when you need or just want. it.
