Create Your Own Space
I remember a weekend when I was twelve years old on a camping trip with my Girl Scout troop. We were given a little free time one day to do whatever we wanted as long as we stayed within the boundary of the camp. I had just received a brand new multi-purpose knife so I scurried up a nearby tree, perched on a branch and whittled a piece of wood until it was smooth and pointy. I felt so proud of myself. Then I waded in the creek in my rain boots. What fun. I was in charge of myself for an entire hour. I thought my own thoughts, felt my own feelings, and did my own thing. It was heaven.
That weekend made a big impression on me. I learned the importance of having my own space–even if for only a short time. Now that I’m an old woman, I’m returning to that memory and realizing how special it would be to create a personal space like that again. My knife is long gone and I don’t have rain boots anymore or the strength to climb a tree, but I do have a desire to spend time thinking my own thoughts, feeling my own feelings, and doing my own thing without anyone else around.
Today I settled on a little space in a room in my house where I can just BE for an hour or so each day. I’ll call it Karen’s Korner. No one else but God knows where it is or what it’s for. It is mine alone. And it is even more important to me during this time of fear and uncertainty in our changing world. May God keep us safe and centered on him.
Do you have a personal space known only to you where you can just BE? How has it benefited you?
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”
– Anne Lamott
Hi, Karen. I loved this post! Yes, to space all your own. XO
Thanks, Mona. I’m lov’n it.
This is so true, Karen, and it gets more true with each passing year! HUGS! Kristi
Kristi, so good to hear from you. Thanks for your loyal support.
Karen, this made me smile. I love these thoughts. I can picture you in the tree carving the wooden stick and also see you as you are today sitting in your private time chair. Also love the Anne Lamott quote. So true. My time alone with my thoughts is on my dog walk. Dash does not talk to me or even listen to me or have judgements or advice I don’t need. As far as God planned it, I am pretty sure Dash won’t be talking soon…so, it’s just Dash, God and me.
Perfect. Dogs are such good silent companions. I enjoy my daughter’s miniature Golden Retriever Rusty and he loves me. Sounds like Dash likes your quiet presence too, so he can think his thoughts without interruption.
The Anne Lamott quote was just what I needed today! The idea of unplugging in a special space that is all ours seems like the perfect way to refresh and reconnect with ourselves and our Heavenly Father. Looking forward to doing that very soon!
Great to hear, Glenda.
Yes and amen to a personal space.
Mine can be in several places. But I take time for personal space. It centers me. Thank you Karen once again you are right on track with life and what we do with it.
Thank you, Joan. Enjoy your special time and space.
Karen this writing is very meaningful for me. Just this afternoon for about two hours I loved being in my own space in my art studio. The window was opened and I breathed in the fresh air and listened to the birds singing. Peace filled my body, heart, mind and soul as I absorbed the wonderful atmosphere. I feel centered and calm after that special time of connecting with my own soul and God.
