Three O’Clock in the Morning
Oh no! Wide awake again. Time to visit the bathroom, drink some water, and put on my night mask so I can get back to sleep.
But it doesn’t always work. My mind ruminates, going over ‘stuff,’ some recent and some ancient. Why do I remember things so easily at night when I should be resting and forget simple things so easily during the day when I need to get on with it?
Some people suggest watching TV or reading a few pages of a book, or drinking hot milk, or walking the floors, or meditating, or…..
Of all the choices I heard or read about I chose meditating. It’s been working, I choose a word or phrase and repeat it slowly and softly until I drift off. “I love you, Lord.” “Thank you, God.”
Ah rest–at last–knowing my God is with me in sleep and in wakefulness.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid, when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Proverbs 3:24
Your writing about waking up in the middle of the night is very relevant for me. In fact, last night I woke up at about 3:00a.m. and I said, “I trust you Lord. I give you my daughters, grand children, and son in laws.” I felt a sense of peace and then practiced deep breathing and much to my surprise I fell asleep. Thank you for always writing from your heart. It always inspires me to be more authentic.
Thank you, Sandy. How wonderful to know that trusting God at 3:00 in the morning or 3:00 in the afternoon works, for God is always with us.
I am a pretty good sleeper but when I do wake up and start thinking of things that keep me awake the best thing I have found that works for me is to start by thanking God for my comfortable and warm bed, and for all my blessings and then I pray for the homeless and for those who do not have a bed nor food and no one to help them. The prayer list is endless but it does not take long for the Thanksgiving lets me go to sleep. Of course I have had some nights that it seems to take “forever” ha~ but when I look at the clock it has not been as long as it seems??? love you, Karen. Stay safe. Margaret
Thanks for sharing your sleep experience, Margaret. I’m glad I’m not alone!
This post hit home for me. Only last night I was up from 3:00-5:00 doing all of the above. But the other thing I end up doing is formulating my books. It would be so much more convenient, as you said, to write during the day not the middle of the night! In the end, it is always God’s word and/or worship that sends me back to sleep. This past year has definitely been a season of praying during the night! Praying you have more sleeping nights than awake ones!
So good to hear from you, Laura. I enjoyed hearing your story of sleepless nights. Yes, God takes over when we ask for help. Last night I wore my sleep mask right away and did a bit of meditating and I had a great night.
Thank you Karen for writing your simple say to day experiences. It feels like I’ve been invited into your home to talk. A warm and gentle place. It’s refreshing and I look forward to it. ππΌπ
Many thanks for your feedback on my writing, Kristi. I really appreciate your encouragement. ππ
