Lessons From Lucy Lizard
A week or so ago it was quite windy–too much for my usual walk in the neighborhood so I decided to get my exercise in my yard. It meant pacing back and forth across and around but it was worth it to avoid being blown over. As I walked from one end to the other I saw a cute little lizard just lazing about on the concrete patio. I decided it was a ‘she’ so I named her Lucy.
I was quite taken by her relaxed position–spread out as though sunbathing–belly stretched and four paws/feet laid out as though she were settling in for a spell. I bent down to look at her closely and her little eyes rolled back and forth. I spoke to her for a few seconds.
“Hello there. Welcome to my yard. Please come anytime. We humans are in quarantine right now and I am feeling a bit lonely so I love that you stopped by. Please hang out for awhile and keep me company while I exercise.”
She stayed put, not making any movement at all. During my twenty-minute walk she remained in one position, as though on duty.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed having her there, how much her peaceful presence comforted me.
At the end of my walk I said ‘good-bye’ and went inside for a moment. Later when I stepped outside to water my flowers she was gone. This tiny angel had showed up for me at just the right time and in just the right place reminding me of the importance of simply being there for another creature when most needed.
I will not soon forget Lucy the Lizard nor the way God used her to let me know I’m never really alone.
Karen I love your story about Lucy Lizard. Recently I’ve taken pictures through my kitchen window of a lizard that frequently sunbaths on a big rock in my backyard. Watching the lizard reminds me of how important it is to slow down, soak in the sun, feel the gentle breeze across my face and breath in God’s presence. How sweet that Lucy Lizard stayed there while you were walking. I love it. Thank you for sharing.
Loved hearing about your experience with the lizard in your yard. God uses some interesting experiences and characters to remind us to slow down and BE here now.
This made my day! and yes… God always lets us know in some way that we are never alone.
Thanks, Chloe. God sure does.
Lol. Is this what we’ve come too? Talking to lizards?
I just talked to a green lizard on my porch this morning! This quarantine had better end soon or the next thing we know we’ll be letting wild creatures in the house!
And, I draw the line there!
Smiles, BRC
Very funny!! 🤣
Tee Hee!
Awe, Karen, this brought some tears to my eyes! I truly believe Lucy was there just for you! I guess I am a strong believer in God’s ways of comforting us in unusual ways. He will comfort us and guide us as
long as we will let Him, is my belief. We may not always feel His comfort-after all we ARE human, but He will give us the comfort we need as we need it, in His time.
Thanks, Dear one, and I hope you and Lucy meet again.
Love, Margaret
Thanks, Margaret. I hope Lucy and I meet again too!
That is just too sweet – we need to look for those the little Lucys that are there for us – no matter what form they show up in! Don’t want to miss out on an angel God has sent ♥
Yes, I agree. We need to keep our eyes and ears open for these little blessings in whatever form they come.
I DO love this story. I like how you welcomed Lucy, too, and made her want to stay. Relationship. God is continuously teaching us about relationship and how we have to be the other end of it! God is purposeful in His lesson, right???
Yes, God is purposeful always and if we’re open we keep learning and growing and recovering.,
I loved the story too and all the responses .
It made me think of the squirrel that led me down the path at Henry Cowell Park this afternoon . Usually the scurry away , but this one stayed 10 feet ahead of me for quite a-distance . Looking back now and then to see if I was following I Love God’s creatures and creation. Never more awesome than under the redwoods .
Yes, under the Redwoods–what a divine place to walk and pray–and scamper–if you’re a squirrel.
Karen, I love that you talked to Lucy Lizard and invited her to stay. And I love that she did. What a sweet God-moment. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for enjoying the moment with me, Carol.
Katen, two days ago I heard cooing outside. There on my balcony was a dove. It stayed all day and I could see and hear it from my office. It was back again yesterday. I can’t see it’s nest but it must be near. And I too did not feel so alone! As Dallas Willard would remind us: We are a people in whom Christ dwells and delights. We live in the strong unshakable kingdom of God. It is not in trouble and neither are we. Blessings!
Hi Jane. Thanks for your sweet message. Your experience with the dove reminds me of one my husband and I had with a pair of doves and their babies. The parents made their home in a tree on our bedroom balcony. We kept track of them from Mom and Dad sitting on the eggs to hatching the little ones and ultimately flying on their own. It was one of the most exciting and tender events of my entire life. I like the Dallas Willard quote too. Thanks for that, as well.
Mom, you are so attentive to the details of your existence and so appreciative of them. Inspiring to me. Thank you! And thanks Lucy!
Thanks, Julie. It means a lot that you read this blog and commented. I know how much you have going on. Love you.
Thanks Karen. I am a 90 year old living in a Retirement village with lots of lovely gardens. My walks bring me joy and remind me that
” Nature is the art of God ” Let’s keep looking for the messages He has in the beauty around us.
