Just a Handful
I walked down the aisle at the grocery store that displayed nuts and nut butters. I spotted a new item called “Just a handful.” Individual large plastic bags contained a dozen or so smaller bags filled with almonds or cashews or a nut and cranberry mix. What a good idea. I could keep one or two in my purse or car when I’m on the run between meals. Everyone can use a little something to nibble on. I grabbed the container and added it to my cart.
As I continued shopping a thought crossed my mind. A handful of nuts may satisfy my between-meal craving but in a matter of hours I’ll be ready for a real meal.
Then my mind wandered to my spiritual hunger. There are times when I need just a handful of bible verses to keep me going on a day when I’m busy, forgetful, or just plain weary. God’s bite-sized promises in Scripture are the perfect spiritual pick-me-up. I made a list of a few to keep on hand for such times.
“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” Isaiah 40:29.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” John 8:36.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus”
Philippians 4:19.
“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart” Psalm 37:4.
You may have a list of your favorites. Please share a few with us.
Phil 1:6. He who began a good work in you will perfect it.
I keep thinking I am the one that does all the work.
What a great comment, Kris. It seems we all fall into that trap from time to time. Thanks for reminding us that God does all the work.
I have several ‘favorites’ but I guess the first one was the motto of the Methodist college, Lambuth in Jackson, Tn.I attended in 1945. It is Philppians 4:8 which tells us to keep our minds on whatever things are true, honest, just, pure, etc.
Another one is Psalms 51:10-13 “Create in me a clean heart, Oh God, and renew a right spirit within me ~etc.” Sometimes this is really hard to do but the verse is one of the best. Our choir at church had an anthem based on this verse and it was one of my favorites and found myself singing it at home a lot!
Another from Jeremial 29: 11-13: ” For I know the plans I have for you, etc.”
My “all time favorite is the verse that gave me comfort and peace when my son was killed in an auto accident when he was 36. I think I mentioned this in your blog one time so I won’t repeat it but you will find it in Isaiah 26: 3. It did not take away my tears, grief but it gave me an unbelievable feeing of peace and comfort that I could not explain but I know it came from God and it still gives me peace. We are blessed!
Love to you,Margaret
Thank you, Margaret. These are wonderful verses that we all can benefit from, especially in times of deep grief and mourning.
Phil. 2:13 “God is working in me, giving me the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.”
I just need to obey what He is try to help me with — and not be so stubborn!
Thanks, Virla. I appreciate your vulnerability. We can all be blessed by Phil. 2:13.
What good advice…I only have one that God gave me when John passed away and I was sitting in my bedroom alone in San Diego. Not know up from down God gave me two passages… This was the second one
Isaiah 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand.
The first one is Isaiah 41:13 and there are many more about God taking a person by their right hand. I did not know that. But now when go out I say this the day you made take me by the right hand and guide me and help me to make good decisions. Sorry I am a little late with my contribution.
No problem. I welcome your comment whenever you post it. I appreciate the verses you shared. Over and over, God promises to take care of us and reminds us to avoid fear because he is with us always.
