Watermelon Days
“Two for $5.00” read the sign in the produce section of our local market. I couldn’t pass up this great buy. Two sweet round melons for such a price. I carried them to my basket and then home to include in a fruit salad for dinner. Yum!
Watermelon takes me back to my childhood—a place I return to in my mind more often now that I’m growing older. Dad liked to sprinkle salt on his wedge. Grandpa wouldn’t eat it because to him it was about as tasteless as a glass of water! But my sister and I dove in, devoured the chunk we were served, and spit out the seeds. What fun.
We looked forward each week to seeing Tony the peddler stop by in his rattling old produce truck, going from house to house to sell his wares fresh from nearby farms. “Just picked,” he’d say with a big smile and then fill Mom’s bags with every kind of summer fruit we could imagine.
I thank you, God, for a lot of things, but I doubt watermelon has ever been on the list before today. Thank you for watermelon and strawberries and peaches and plums—favorite fruits from my early years and now from my later years too.
Talking about fruit also brings to mind the fruit of the Spirit.
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives:
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness . . .” (Galatians 5:22)
As I nourish my body with summer fruits I’m reminded to nourish my soul with the fruit of the Spirit.
Love this. I am a big fan of watermelon and anything watermelon flavored. The photo made my mouth water. I have watermelon popsicles almost every night! Galatians 5:22 happens to be one of my favorite scriptures also, on the fruit of the spirit. Thank you for the walk down memory lane too.
You are so welcome. I’ll be thinking of you when I eat watermelon next.
I had enjoyed a wonderful slice just before reading your delightful piece, Karen. I savor watermelon and all the other fruits of summer with joy and gratitude. God is so good to give us such a tasty variety in food, from flavors to textures.
And I’ve been dwelling on the fruit of the Spirit lately, so all of this was timely for me. Thanks, my friend!
How lovely to hear from you, Judy. Thank you for your sweet words.
My dad and I used to now only devour delicious watermelons, but we would see how far we could spit the seeds. What fun! I love to eat watermelons even now. I love your reflections from your childhood.
Thanks, Sandy. Spitting the seeds is half the fun, fur sure! 🙂
I had to smile really big when I saw the watermelon as my son-in-law bought a nice round watermelon yesterday and I was at my computer when I could smell it being cut open!! WOW ! I love watemelon and I put a little salt on mine!!
I like the picture!!
Happy days to you ! Margaret
Thanks, Margaret. My dad liked salt on his watermelon too. 🙂
My little watermelon 🍉 patch is growing quietly, as we converse, with two beauties already peeking through the leaves!
I’d mail you one Karen if I could!
Can’t wait to taste them…😋
🌸Smiles, BRC
Oh what fun it must be to grow your own watermelons. Enjoy! 🙂
Summer and watermelon- they just seem to go together! I, too, have fond memories of sitting on the curb with my brother on hot summer nights , munching away at the sweet goodness and spitting out the seeds! At 10 years old I never dreamed that I would see the seedless variety we all enjoy today!!
Thanks, Glenda. It’s fun to imagine you enjoying watermelon as a little girl, as I did too. 🙂
I love watermelon and its refreshing sweetness. When I was pregnant with my youngest daughter, who was born during the 1987 “shake and bake” October heat wave and earthquake of Los Angeles, I ate watermelon nearly every day. Some days, it was all I craved! Thanks for the memory trip!
It is fun to take a trip down memory lane–especially enjoying sweet memories. 🙂
